Montreal is an ideal city for a party weekend and for those looking to take in the sites by day. The city is located in the Provence of Quebec and is the 2nd largest French speaking tourist destination outside of Paris. It is sometimes considered the poor man’s Paris and rightfully so. Montreal is less expensive and has lots to do and see on any travel budget.
For those on a tight budget, Montreal offers many wonderful options. You can start with a walking tour of the Old Port of Montreal or try your hand at ballroom dancing in Ile Sainte Helene. From June until August you can find people dancing 3 nights each week for free. It is located nearby to the Parc Jean-Drapeau Metro station.
The Montreal Underground City is a great way to spend your time too. It was built in 1962 as a way to stay out of the brutal cold weather and get around the city. Today you will find it lined with shops, restaurants, and world class nightclubs. It’s free to access and a great way to spend a cold or rainy day.
If you are looking for something fun to do during the day while in Montreal, be sure to check out La Ronde Amusement Park. This amusement park is located on St. Helen’s Island and was built for the Expo in 1967. The park has 9 roller coasters and many other rides for the thrill seeking crowd. You will also find cafes, snack bars, and souvenir stands inside the park. It is open mid may through October with varying operating hours, so be sure to check the schedule before you head out.
Montreal also has its share of fairs and festivals throughout the year. The Montreal Jazz Festival takes place each year towards the end of June and is the largest jazz festival in the world. People come from all over to attend. The Just for Laughs Festival is a must see if you will be in Montreal in the month of July. You can find Stand up Comedy Shows, Free street performances, and much more. Another popular music festival is called Heavy MTL. It is 2 day music fair held in July that features many famous heavy metal bands and artists.
In the evenings, when the sun goes down, Montreal comes to life! The city is full of world class nightlife and clubs. Some of these offer live entertainment, dancing, and special shows. Remember you must be 18+ to drink in Montreal. Having a designated driver if you have a rental car is highly recommended. Remember that you can access most of the city walking through the underground streets too.
